Okay– I’m finally at the point where I want to purge. Like everything. We just have too much stuff. We are overflowing and there isn’t any free space ANYWHERE. The toys, the shoes, the clothes, the arts and crafts, Legos… I mean the list goes on– it’s just too much. So since the kids have been back at school, I have been on full on purge mode. I’ve donated and dumped more bags than my garbage can is even able to hold each week and I’ve taken pictures of my kids’ artwork and hopefully, I’m able to make something of it later. But for now, I’m just focused on clearing and cleansing the space.
So in the process of trying to purge, we got handed down this Ikea bunk bed. It’s perfect– not too big it can be a loft type or flip it over for a regular twin. Anyway, I couldn’t pass it up because eventually, there will be a need it. Well, that was 7 months ago. Fast forward to the beginning of the school year and all of the clutter from Summer is piled up- I thought it would be a good idea for me to switch Travis to the big kid bed. At daycare he sleeps on a little mat on the floor, so I thought– no big deal, easy transition. The first few nights he did great; slept through but woke up before there was even a slight glimpse of light. NOT ok. This proceeded for a week. I was reluctant to buy anything because the whole purpose of this transition was to get rid of stuff mainly the crib. But after 10 days of crazy early wake-up times, co-sleeping, and demanding breakfast before 5:15 am, I threw in the towel. I was down to purchase anything that would help us get more sleep.
I asked my mom squad and everyone said I needed this “OK to Wake Clock.” So after debating whether or not I needed more stuff, I bit the bullet and bought it. I had to wait 2 agonizing days of early wake ups until it was here. I hyped T up and told him he was going to get a present in the mail. He kept guessing a dinosaur, so.. I had to figure out a way to make this clock super cool. T got home from school and the clock was set up. It’s a cute little round guy with feet and antennas. Not sure exactly what they were going for here, but it’s functional. I like that it’s easy to read and set up, there are different brightness settings and that in addition to batteries you could plug it in via USB. The clock also has a nap feature which could come in handy for those who resist the nap and ultimately the clock can be turned into an alarm clock. Multipurpose so it has a ton of longevity.
Well, dinner and baths passed and we were quickly approaching bedtime. I don’t know how many times I repeated “Don’t get out of bed until the light is green..” but it felt like a million. So the first night I set the clock to 6:15 am. He’s been getting up SO early, I didn’t want him to feel defeated and set it to his normal wake up time. Books and bed and one more “Don’t get out of bed until the light turns green” and out we went. Like clockwork the next morning 5:25, diaper off, boardshorts on strolling into our room in the complete dark demanding avocado toast. This is not happening!!! I asked him if his light turned green, he said no. Well, I picked him up, gave him a snug and put this little guy back into bed. I told him he had to hang out until the light turned green, again. I gave him a few books and a flashlight which seemed to keep him occupied for a hot minute. Did I forget to mention that once the whole waking up early tidbit happened, I put this kid back into the crib. With a lot of fighting and arguing, he succumbed and he went back into the crib to hang for a bit. I get up at 5:45 am Monday through Friday, so there was truly no use in going back to bed. I knew that if I needed to get ready for work, it was now or never. My makeup half done and hair half up, a little human comes walking into my room saying “the light is taking too long.” ugh. So now we were up for good. T and I are now doing our morning makeup and hair routine.
So the same thing kept happening for the next couple of nights. I set the clock earlier and earlier because I really wanted him to win. On the 3rd morning, he did it! He was SO excited that his light turned green. I jumped, danced and was overly animated and he was so proud of himself for staying in bed until his light turned green. With school in full swing, someone was bound to get sick and poor T got it first. A blessing and a curse but this kid needed much-needed rest. He was finally sleeping until 6:45 am and going to be super early. It’s been 3 weeks since we’ve had our Ok to Wake Clock and things are going beautifully. I switched the clock to turn on at 6:45 and we are smooth sailing. I would most definitely recommend this to any family that is struggling with waking up early! I wish I would have known about this when my Bigs were little– the time change is a doozy.
